Family Devotion Ideas for this Week (Preschool and Children’s Sunday School — April 15)

Child reading the Bible Remember to “teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (Deuteronomy 11:19). Excerpts from the weekly LifeWay email:

Bible Teaching For Kids: Babies-Twos
Bible Teaching For Kids, 1s and 2s

The Big Idea:  People thanked Jesus for helping them.
The Bible Story:  A Man Thanked Jesus (Luke 17:11-19)
Bible Phrase: Babies: Jesus helped people. Matthew 14:14 1s & 2s: Be thankful.  Colossians 3:15
Connecting Points this week: Rub a piece of gauze along your child’s arm; if your child is an older 2, cut a length of gauze that he can wrap around his arm. Comment that Jesus met 10 men who were sick and had bandages wrapped around their arms and legs. Jesus helped the men. One man thanked Jesus. Pat the floor or the Bible with a steady rhythm. Repeat the Bible phrase as you pat the rhythm. Pray, thanking God for Jesus who helped people.

The Big Idea: Jesus did things only He could do.

The Bible Story: Jesus Helped Ten Men (Luke 17:11-19)

Bible Verse: Jesus helped sick people. (Luke 7:21)

Connecting Points this week: Review the Bible story with your child. Talk about who Jesus helped and how He helped. Help your child open a Bible to Luke 7:21 and say the Bible verse together. Emphasize that only God and Jesus could have made the men well. Encourage your family to recall other stories in which Jesus did things only He could do (calmed the storm, fed more than 5000 people with 5 loaves and 2 fish, walked on water, made blind men see and lame men walk).

The Big Idea: People told that Jesus was alive.
The Bible Story: Two Men Saw Jesus (Luke 24:13-35)
Bible Verse: The men told people about Jesus. Acts 11:20
Connecting Points this week: Take a walk around your neighborhood with your child or family. Or go to a park or walking trail where you can walk together. Talk about the Bible story in which two men were walking to Emmaus. Note that when they realized that they had seen and talked with Jesus, they quickly returned to Jerusalem to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive. Find a place to stop and sit; encourage your child (and other family members) to name things they see that are alive and things that are not alive. Pray, thanking God that Jesus is alive.

The Big Idea:  I can believe that Jesus is alive.
The Bible Story: Jesus Met Two Disciples on the Road (Luke 24:13-35)
Memory Verse:  Luke 24:34
Connecting Points this week: Walk with your family on a walking trail or around your neighborhood. Talk about the Bible story. Note that the disciples were discussing what had happened in Jerusalem. Encourage your family to recall the events of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Help your child find Luke 24 in his Bible. Look at verses 34-35 and discover what the men told the other disciples. Say the memory verse together. Make a list of people who have told your child (and you) that Jesus is alive, people who told you about Jesus. Thank God for these people.
